Maruyama Zoo

Description The zoo houses 934 animals representing about 180 species in the pavilions that include the Tropical Animal Pavilion and Tropical Bird Pavilion. This is the one of the famous zoos in the nation with a wide variety of unique facilities. Maruyama Kids' Land, an outdoor stage and grass fields, where visitors can eat lunch, are among the facilities on offer.

Admission fee
  • 600 yen for high school students and older
  • Free for junior high school students and younger and those aged 65 and older (A student's handbooks or a senior-citizen booklet is required.)
Access From Maruyama koen Subway Station (Tozai Line[T06]), take the Dobutsuen sen JR Hokkaido Bus to the Dobutsuen mae bus stop, or walk 15 minutes from Maruyama koen Subway Station (Tozai Line[T06]).

Sunpiazza Aquarium
Address Atsubetsu Chuo 2-5, Atsubetsu-ku (011-890-2455)
Description Urban-style aquarium located in the downtown area. About 10,000 fish, aquatic mammals and semi-aquatic mammals representing 200 species, including sea otters, penguins and seals, as well as sea fish and freshwater fish, are displayed.

North Safari Sapporo
Address Toyotaki 469-1, Minami-ku (011-596-5300)
Description Visitors can touch and watch various species of free-range animals, such as pelicans, beavers, wallabies, maras, snowy owls, and reindeers, to name a few while at night visitors can experience a Night Safari. It is open until 20:00 even in winter, and the restaurant provides a number of original dishes. Visitors can also eat while watching animals in the Kamakura snow caves.

Access
  • From central Sapporo, drive 40 minutes to Jozankei on Ishiyama-dori (Route 230), and turn left at the third traffic signal from the Road Information Center.
  • 10-minute drive from Jozankei Spa.
  • Public transportation: Take the Jotetsu Bus bound for Jozankei Onsen from Makomanai subway station (Namboku Line[N16]) to Toyotaki shogakko mae bus stop. (Complimentary shuttle service is available there)
