Each month there are fascinating events in Sapporo.


January

The chilliest month of the year in Sapporo. If you visit the city in January, you will need sweaters and overcoats, and caps and snow boots are also essential. If you are sensitive to the cold, a hand warmer would be even more helpful.

February

In early February, the largest winter event, the Sapporo Snow Festival starts. The city is crowded with a large number of skiers and snowboarders. Don't miss the snow-clad Clock Tower and trees glazed with ice in the front garden of the Hokkaido Government Office.

March

Though the thin winter sunshine becomes a little warmer, it is still chilly at night. Visitors should prepare shoes with skid-proof soles as well as overcoats. As the temperature between daytime and night tends to change greatly, please bring a jumper or warm underwear.

April

At last you start to feel warm but still you can enjoy skiing in the mountainous areas. In late April, carts selling corn appear and fountains start jetting water in Odori Park. The whole city is filled with the brightness of spring. Mizubasho, or white arum, in the Botanic Garden, Nishioka Park, and Jozankei, are a must-see.

May

The cherry blossom front arrives in Hokkaido and it is the month when the Lilac Festival is held. Don't miss the chance to see the lilacs in Odori Park. As there can be sudden cold days, called rira-bie, at this time of year, it is advisable to bring a jacket.

June

You can enjoy refreshing early summer days in June, but the cool mornings and evenings may be a bit of a surprise, so you should bring a light coat or jacket. Although it is said that there is no rainy season in Hokkaido, we have Ezo tsuyu, a period of continuous rain around this time of the year.

July

It is now high summer. It is not unusual that daytime high temperatures reach 30°C. Yet you feel cool in the morning and evening, so you won't need to worry about an uncomfortable night's sleep. The dry and refreshing heat makes Sapporo ideal as a summer retreat.

August

After the Festival of Obon which takes place between August 12th and August 15th, the temperature drops dramatically in Sapporo which makes swimming in the ocean at our picturesque beaches quite chilly. If you come to Sapporo after mid-August we strongly recommend that pack for temperatures around 21 Celsius or 70 Fahrenheit.

September

September is suitable for outdoor activities like driving or hiking, but do not forget to be prepared for any abrupt temperature changes. In Sapporo, the onion harvest begins in the Okadama area and salmon come back to the Toyohira River. The Japanese call this season, "Autumn of eating."

October

Autumn comes with hurried steps. The air is brisk and we tend to have rainy days. Most people are already dressed in warm clothing and the big temperature changes within each day make the autumn leaves exceptionally beautiful. You can see brightly colored-leaves in Jozankei and Hoheikyo.

November

Even in the plain areas of Sapporo, leaves turn red and the first snow of the year is observed. You should make sure to wear warm clothing. In the latter part of the month, when the romantic White Illumination begins, you will need coats and gloves.

December

Suburban ski slopes start to open with the start of the real winter. Viewing the snowy city from a tour bus is highly recommendable and you will be able to see snow-capped rowanberry (nanakamado), snow-clad Meiji-era, Western-style buildings, and trees with rime ice flowers. The city looks as if it was made of sugar. You will always get to experience a white Christmas if you come to Sapporo.
